What is upside down text?

Upside down text is ordinary text rewritten with Unicode characters that look like flipped versions of the original letters, then reversed in order so that the result reads correctly when the page is turned upside down. For example, the letter "a" becomes "ɐ", "b" becomes "q", and "c" becomes "ɔ". After every character is mapped, the whole string is reversed, so the first letter ends up on the right and the last on the left, exactly where they need to be for upside-down reading.

The effect relies on Unicode, the international standard that assigns a unique number to every character in every script. Unicode includes thousands of characters beyond the basic Latin alphabet, and many of them happen to resemble Latin letters rotated 180 degrees. By swapping each normal letter for one of these look-alikes and reversing the order, the tool produces text that looks flipped without using any images, fonts or special software.

How upside down mapping works
